Amazon.com not caving in to North Carolina 1

Jun29

In another development on the Amazon.com/State of North Carolina affiliate taxes story, Amazon has started booting affiliates in North Carolina so that it won’t have to deal with the new state taxes that will affect affliliate marketing.

In a pre-emptive move, Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) is booting all of its affiliates who legally reside in North Carolina. The state is likely to pass a law this week that would force online retailers with a physical presence in North Carolina to begin collecting sales tax on purchases originating there.

Fair enough. Amazon.com isn’t messing around, they obviously don’t want to deal with this situation at all and will avoid this stuff where necessary.

Why is this such big news?

North Carolina figured that it had Amazon cornered. When the state of New York passed a similar bill last year, Amazon blinked. It decided to keep its affiliates in place, and now it tacks on sales tax to New York orders.

So, Amazon just ain’t gonna roll over on this new one. Good for them. Bad for North Carolina based Amazon affiliates.
