Freelancing: It’s All About Communication
I’ve done a fair amount of freelancing at this point in my career. It’s been interesting. I’ve learned a lot. The one thing that really stands out to me though, after all these years, is the importance of communication.
When working as a freelancer, you need to continually keep the trust of those that you are working for. Freelancers figure this out really quickly. If you lose the trust of your client it’s all over.
How can you keep the trust of the client, even under dire circumstances?
Communication.
You’re always going to run into hiccups during projects while working as a freelancer. It just happens. During these types of situations, you just need to keep a solid communications line going with your client so that they never feel left in the dark.
Even if you’re delivering bad news to a client, such as trying to explain how some totally crazy and insane outside forces have completely ruined your ability to hit a deadline, what do you do? You must be quick and honest in your delivery of the news. You must humble yourself, and you must do something to keep them happy.
At a minimum, just making sure to communicate all project progress and issues to your clients will keep them happy, since they’re never in the dark. It’s really that simple some times.
