Blogging, Defamation & Insurance 0

Jul6

Ok, so blogging is becoming super-mainstream now to the point where people can throw opinions online in a matter of minutes, no matter how fresh or urgent those opinions are.

Be careful if you like to take the “controversy” angle. There are some example of people getting sued over defamatory claims they made on their blogs. There’s insurance for this kind of stuff, you might want to check into it.

I was just reading through an article about bloggers getting insurance, which I felt was really worth sharing.

The basic point that was made:

If you blog, that’s why it may be worth buying insurance to make sure you are covered in case you are accused of making libelous or defamatory statements.

Ok. So what does that mean? I mean, come on, the Internet is all about freedom of speech right? Well, just don’t monetarily cause anybody any greif and you should be fine.

This year, a court awarded $129,794 to an Ohio woman after a blogger said her property was haunted, reports Media Law. Another blogger was ordered to pay $1.8 million after referring to someone as a “failed lawyer.”

Ouch. So these examples basically are examples of people probably writing things on their blog that in turned caused other people to lose money or be hit monetarily by the effects of the writing.

It’s okay to cause a little controversy on the Internet, that’s how you get people interested in many cases. Just don’t cross the line to defame anybody or anything. That might get you into trouble. It’s not a good practice anyways, defamation. At least that’s my opinion, being a person from the Midwest USA.

The insurance thing? I say it doesn’t sound like a bad idea. If your blog or web site is an investment for you, or you depend on it to make money, you probably should check into insurance as you would with anything else. That sounds like a good idea to me.

Check with your insurance agent to see what they have available for coverage, I’m sure it’ll be the first time your agent has had anybody ask them about insurance to cover blogging habits :)
