Google is a Hypocrite
I’m going to refer to Google as though it is it’s own being. Because it kind of is.
It has recently been revealed that Google is pretty hypocritical when it comes to the “rules” that they try to enforce upon all other webmasters and web properties.
This really comes as no surprise to me, I’ve watched Google pretty much not practice what they preach for quite a while now. They like to slam webmasters for putting too many ads on their pages, and not very much content, for example – but have you seen what a typical Google search results page looks like these days? It’s all paid ads above the fold, in a lot of cases, exactly the type of thing that Google would probably condemn you for if they reviewed and critiqued your own site and it was doing the same thing.
Don’t listen to Google’s every word
If they are going to prove that they don’t practice what they preach, then take everything they say with a grain of salt. They are using the exact same marketing tactics that they are condemning others for using. The whole thing is ridiculous at best.
Just make quality web sites and experiences
Don’t follow the rules that any search engine puts forth. Just make good web experiences. Make sites that inform and engage your users and visitors, and don’t worry about the rules being put out there by the overlords that won’t follow them themselves.
If you focus on good experiences for your users, you will probably be making the types of sites that search engines like Google try to define with their tons and tons of “webmaster guidelines”. So just by default you’ll be falling in line with the majority of what the big search engine overlords want to see. But maybe it’s not really worth it to strain yourself to learn about all the super fine print and rules, because the big guys that set those rules don’t seem to play by them anyways. So why bother?
If what you are doing is working, and it makes for a good user experience, don’t worry too much about what big Google has to say. That’s what I say.
