Making Affiliate Sites Based On Your Interests and Needs
One thing that many affiliate marketers run into, especially those that market physical products, is the issue of trying to promote stuff that you’re just not that personally interested in.
I’ve tried to avoid this myself, as I read a lot about how it can be detrimental to the overall excitement of building and maintaining the websites involved.
How do I avoid focusing on niches that I have no personal interest in?
I just don’t tackle them, it’s that simple.
Yeah, there’s been a couple projects I’ve put out there that don’t really fall into the realm of my personal interests. But that’s how I found out the importance of sticking to stuff that you do have an interest in.
It doesn’t even necessarily need to be a hobby or something you enjoy. It just needs to be something you deal with frequently.
Let me give you a general example of the types of affiliate sites and niches I focus on.
- Saltwater Aquariums – I have a big saltwater aquarium in my dining room. This is a hobby, I have no problem whatsoever coming up with passionate and informative content for this niche and for my site.
- Woodworking Tools – I like woodworking and do it in my garage. I review the tools I buy and use. And I also blog about the projects I build. Simple and effective and right in line with my interests. It’s easy for me to create content for this niche.
- Cat Condos and Cat Trees – I have three cats at home, and I buy them this kind of stuff, so why not review this kind of stuff on a website? That’s what I do. This is easy content for me to come up with. And everybody likes looking at pictures and videos of cute cats.
- Carpet Cleaners – My cats make messes on the carpet all the time. I need to clean up after them all the time. I have a website where I review carpet cleaners and detergents. Once again, easy content for me to create cause I USE THIS KINDA STUFF ALL THE TIME. It might seem like a dry topic, but it works great for me and I know a lot about it.
- Vacuum Cleaners – Once again, an easy niche for me cause I’m always cleaning up after my cats. I’m always trying to find a better vacuum. It’s easy for me to write about using vacuums and what the best vacuums are because I use them all the time.
- Stand Mixers – My wife loves to bake and she has this awesome KitchenAid stand mixer. I created a niche site that reviews stand mixers. My wife gets to try out new stand mixers while we write reviews for our site. It seems like a mundane product for some people but a great fit for us.
These are just a few examples of some of my niches I work in. I work in them because I know them well and can write content and create videos in these niches very easily from my own personal experiences. Or my wife can help.
If you stick to stuff like this in your own affiliate marketing adventures, you won’t find yourself losing the passion as easily.
What’s an example of a site that did not fall in line with my interests or my wife’s interests?
Sewing machines. I built a site that reviews sewing machines and provides sewing tips. It’s not going anywhere cause I have no personal interest in the subject and neither does my wife. It makes some money, but I won’t be expanding that niche at all cause I don’t feel passionate about it. I just can’t get excited about sewing machines.
